Windy Saturday Half-Century Trudge

Yet another windy Saturday ride with a puny average speed. I’m still trying to figure out how it is that I so consistently fart off until the very last moment to complete my ride and consistently fail to add mileage to my Saturday rides. This afternoon’s 52 miles is the second longest ride so far this year. That is simply pathetic.

I had originally planned to make today a metric century, but as I began my absolutely pathetic ascent of the easy climb up to Portola Valley—even if it was against a blustery headwind—I began to realize that I’m putting in work that amounts to cycling half-assedness. The wind left me showing 16 miles an hour when I got to the top of the “climb”. I hung out for ten minutes or so at Triangle Park before continuing on toward Woodside. I “climbed” La Cañada toward Edgewood Road, again doing my damnest to avoid getting any kind of realistic pace going. The headwinds and crosswinds were substantial, making me work harder and get whiny earlier than I usually do.

“This is not a hill, you weak piece of shit,” I said. “This is not a headwind. You better stop insulting that bicycle. If you’re going to ride like this, you better just wait for the bus to take your sorry ass home.” I’m so glad noone’s around when I’m getting all pissed at myself.

The descent down Edgewood Road changed my luck a little and allowed me to gain back some clock, stomping out a personal best 46 mile an hour shove toward Redwood City. More pansiness down to Outfitter and back—because I’m way too lame to come up with a route that varies even a quarter of a mile off the status quo—and the hard gritty fight against a continuous breeze.

Better luck next weekend, I guess.

Today:   52.17 mi;   2:48:43 (18.6 mph avg; 46.0 mph max) May  :  170.94 mi;   9:03:12 (18.9 mph avg; 46.0 mph max)

Goal : 5000.00 mi (2398.39 mi to go : 52.03% complete)
