Closing Out 2004

In 2004, I learned that I can do anything. I set a goal at the beginning of the year to ride 4000 miles on my bicycle. About an hour ago, I finished all the cycling I’ll do for the whole rest of the year.

As I approached the week, I thought it would be amazingly sweet to close out the year with 5100 miles on my chart. One more century marker and I’d be good to go. Tuesday, my afternoon commute ended up on the train, due to the weather. Yesterday, a big storm moved in and left me with 9 miles on my chart. So, today, during a respite from the string of weather storms inbound, I headed out of the office a little early and decided to close the year out right. It rained on me a little, but since I’ve become a tough son of a bitch, I steamed on.

At Middlefield Rd and Prior Lane, I rolled through the 9200 odometer mark. Six tenths of a mile later, at Glenwood Road and Moulton Drive, I kicked on past 5100 odometer miles. My actual mileage differs from my odometer by a little under six miles, so I hammered up Valparaiso and back down. At Encinal Avenue and Tudor Drive, I completed my 5100th mile of 2004. That’s 127.51% of what I aimed to do this year. I closed out the ride with a final odometer of 9207.00 (5106.4 odo; 5100.45 actual).

Last ride: 27.86 mi; 1:29:27 (18.7 mph avg / 30.0 mph max) Dec 31   : 38.38 mi; 2:04:42 (18.5 mph avg / 30.0 mph max)
This week: 93.19 mi; 5:05:18 (18.3 mph avg / 30.0 mph max)
December: 725.88 mi; 39:13:56 (18.5 mph avg / 42.0 mph max)
2004: 5100.45 mi in 299:15:51 (17.0 mph avg / 44.0 mph max)
