Mixer Magazine party

I decided to do something different tonight, noting on SFStation that Big Heart City was hosting Mixer Magazine‘s showcasing of David Alvarado, who recently released his United DJs of America compilation. It sounded like fun.

I talked for a few minutes outside the club to Courtney, an interesting new Californian (recently from Research Triangle, NC), who works near me. She seemed pretty nifty, but I felt awkward just hanging out with some stranger for more than a few minutes. I headed for the entrance of the club.

First of all, it was twenty bucks. I hesitated, then paid. Fuck it, paying twenty bucks to dance in a moderately lively place beats paying ten to dance on an empty dancefloor.

The music was very very good, but the crowd was largely the gap set—incredibly plastic. Of course, the club was pretty slick and commercial—not at all what I’m used to. I stayed on the dancefloor until shortly before 4am, singing and dancing with several cool people. It was a hoot. I doubt that I’ll go back to Big Heart City if $20 is the usual cover. I could have as much fun elsewhere for much much less.
