Jay Def Visits California

This weekend, my best friend, Jay Def, flew down here to rainy, windy Northern California for a weekend of fun and hijinks. This afternoon, I took him to the airport.

Jay lives in Idaho, but the only reasonably priced plane tickets we could find him required him to change planes in Phoenix. The weather in San Francisco delayed his flight to SFO, so we had a late dinner and decided, at the last minute, to go to a club in the city to hear Marques Wyatt.

On Saturday afternoon, we grabbed food in Cupertino, drank coffee at a nifty little place across from De Anza College, and did a tag team mix session. Jay’s the guest, so he gets to start. We went into my studio and took three songs each, then passed the decks back. We did four sets of three tracks each and had a great time, just two guys in my music studio. You can even listen to the mix, if you’re interested. Digeum Mix Sessions – Volume 02, Session Juliet: Jay Def Visits California.

On Saturday evening, we managed to get hold of some of our friends from GTI, specifically Combustible Monkey and, eventually, Bizzy. Ethiopian food was first, then we found a really quirky place in the Outer Sunset — Eagle’s Drift — a darts place which hosted their monthly karaoke night. Horrifying renditions of pop tunes ensued while the four of us threw darts randomly at a cork circle. Good times. I’ll definitely be back to this little place soon.

This morning, Jay and I headed back to San Francisco for the third day in a row to enjoy brunch with a gaggle of GTI people, including Tote Board Brad, MizSarah, Combustible Monkey, Bizzy, Image Imago, Retro Joe, Nomi, Andrew J, and Brad’s girlfriend. I haven’t seen anybody from this group in an unnecessarily long time, although I’ve spent most of my free time lately sequestered in Suburbistan. Wandering around the Haight and buying records at Amoeba closed out a very busy weekend. I can’t wait for Jay Def to return to us. It’s really fun having him around.

Happy birthday, sir.
