Forward

For the first time in five years, I’ve been to 1015, the San Francisco superclub on every tourist’s clubbing list—but also on every local househead’s avoid list. Last night’s party, Forward, featured an astonishing lineup that simply could not be missed.

I received a $10 pass from Adnan and jumped on the Caltrain to check the party out. When I got there, Garth was spinning some old gronky early-90s techno in the main room, somebody was playing mainstream hip-hop in the front room, and the place was fairly empty. After Garth, Adnan came on the turntables in the main room and rip the speakers to shreds for a couple of hours. His set ranged from Latin-influence house music to growly gronky techno and inspired a whole throng of people, including nearly all the regulars from the old Imperial Dub dance parties, to work up a serious sweat.

After he finished his mouthwatering set, Jenö took over with a fist-pumping set of chunky house tracks. I danced with my friend, Wendy, whom I hadn’t seen in ages, who is going away to Hawaii. She said beautiful, beautiful things to me and I’m so glad I got to hang out with her.

A bunch of us headed down to the basement, where Corey Black worked up a very compelling mix of deep deep house. This circle of friends that used to frequent the Dubplate party when it was at Liquid were all together again and it really felt like old times. Except the dancefloor slides better at 1015.

At three, I collected my hugs and handshakes, jumped in a cab, and headed over to the bus station for my long ride down the Peninsula. I really had a spectacular time. What a wonderful party. Wendy, Angelica, Alison, Corey, Adnan, Mike, Dave, Jason, Patrick, Gigi, it was a pleasure to hang out with all of you. Let’s do it again soon.
