Back on the Bike

Today was the first day since Thursday, the tenth, that I commuted the full ride both to and from work. The low-pressure system now moving toward Mexico parked off the California coast for more than a week, slinging storm after storm through the Bay Area. I caught a short break in the constant downpours last week. Yesterday, it was “mess-with-the-cyclist” day—the rain in the morning ended about 30 minutes after I arrived at work, started again about an hour before I headed home, and subsided just after sunset. Looking out the window at the beautiful sunshine until mid-afternoon made me want to flip out and punch a meteorologist. Or, at least remind Juno that, just because I gave Aeneas a hand long ago, she doesn’t have to send her storms after me.

This morning’s commute made it clear to me how soft I can get after giving up a few days to the rain gnomes. I only got 4.5 hours of sleep last night (thanks, neighbor guy, for the six hours a day you spend on the phone—can’t you do that shit before I go to bed?) and that affected my kick to work this morning. After work, I felt pretty sluggish on the way out, but a quick stop at Outfitter changed all that. The service guy trued my badly out-of-whack rear rim and readjusted my front brake. With a whole new bag of Clif Shots and some sunlight left, I stampeded down Foothill Expressway home.

Let’s hope my new rain gear arrives from my Canadian friends soon. Oh, by the way, order your wet/inclement riding gear in October, not February. I’m such a dumb ass.

I’m riding to 28.52 mile weekdays until I get my riding legs back (instead of the 31.37 I was attempting before the storm came). It certainly feels good to be back over my beautiful baby again.
