Week 47

Dayamn. After my long-awaited purchase of my delicious new Trek 520 last weekend, I did all of my miles this week on the Trek. Before this week, I had averaged 30 kph on exactly one ride ever. This week’s total average speed over 212+ miles was faster than that. Being on, as a friend of mine called it, “road hardware” has been so blissful.

I was almost too fast this week, which makes me really grin, because I’ll only get faster yet. Commutes home exceeded 19 mph on two of the three working days this week and daily average speed records were broken on three consecutive days — all over 30 kph. In fact, I’m fast enough on that beautiful Trek that I got my first ever weekly average speed over 18 miles an hour at 18.7 (30.1 kph). That’s not bad for the first week out of the gate on a new ride.

This week’s off-work days allowed me to grab a couple of larger-than-normal weekdays and discover that the repaving project in Portola Valley is finished. That road is wonderfully smooth. In the process, I got to set a new best top speed (44 mph). Zoom!

As far as mileage goes, as I passed Google yesterday (no, I didn’t stop in the wrong jersey this time), I put more miles on my chart this year than the combination of both 2002 and 2003. And it’s only just now Thanksgiving.

Today’s ride started late and ended slightly after sunset. I felt strong and fast, but I wasn’t quite powerful enough to maintain a 19+ mph average against strong headwinds and crosswinds. Must, therefore, do more headwind training.

Today: 50.32 mi in 2:43:01 (18.5 mph avg / 39.0 mph max)
This week: 212.41 mi in 11:21:29 (18.7 mph avg / 44.0 mph max)

Month so far: 784.44 miles.
Year so far: 4313.42 miles (107.84% of goal).
